Which activities does FreeKin support?
Seven: hiking, trail running, mountain biking, gravel, road cycling, ski touring, and motorcycle. Each has its own routing profile, so designed routes follow paths that make sense for that activity.
Tracks
How do I add a track?
Two ways. Upload a GPX or FIT file from a previous activity, or use the route designer to draw one that snaps to real trails. We read the elevation and terrain automatically and compute the difficulty scores for you.
What if the route designer can't reach the routing engine?
Designed routes need our routing service, but plain GPX/FIT upload always works even when routing is unavailable — so you can still get your track in and scored.
What does "hide endpoints" do?
At upload time you can hide a track's endpoints. FreeKin trims a radius (200 m by default) around the start and finish for everyone but you, so private places like your home or car aren't exposed while the rest of the route stays shareable. It's decided per track, not account-wide.
Why does a similar track appear next to mine?
When two routes share a lot of ground, FreeKin links them as "similar tracks" (siblings) so you can compare. We never merge or overwrite them — your version stays yours, with its own difficulty and history.
Difficulty
What do the three numbers mean?
Every track has three independent 1–10 axes: cardio (aerobic demand), technical (how tricky the terrain is), and exposure (how consequential a slip would be). They're separate on purpose — a route can be an easy cardio day but highly exposed, or a hard climb on smooth ground.
Why is the difficulty different for me than for my friend?
Each axis combines a geometric value (from the terrain) with a community consensus value, and then subtracts your own per-axis endurance. So "6" reflects how hard the track is for you. Set your endurance in Profile → Settings.
How do I rate a track's difficulty?
Open a track and submit your rating on any of the three axes. Ratings feed the consensus value that everyone sees, so the more people rate, the more accurate it gets.
Events and live location
How do I create an event?
Pick a track, tap Create event, and set a start time and window. Invite other users; they'll get a notification and can join.
How does live location work?
While an event is live, participants who opt in share their real-time position with each other on the map — it's designed for outdoor safety, so the group stays found. When the event window ends, sharing stops automatically and positions aren't kept as a history.
Can I turn live location off?
Yes. Sharing is opt-in per event, and you can stop sharing or leave the event at any time. Outside of an active event, your location is never shared.
Account and privacy
Can other users see my email or endurance settings?
No. Your email, push notification token, and endurance settings are private. Other users never see them.
How do I report a user or content?
Use the report option on any track, comment, or profile. For urgent safety issues, write directly to [email protected].
How do I delete my account?
See the dedicated account deletion instructions. All your data is removed immediately.
Technical issues
The map screen won't load or is blank.
Check your connection — map tiles and elevation are fetched over the network. If it persists, fully close and reopen the app; if it still fails, contact support with your device model and OS version.
I'm not receiving push notifications.
Check that notifications are enabled for FreeKin in your device settings (Settings → Notifications → FreeKin). You can also toggle notifications inside the app under Settings → Notifications.
